GES Weekly Newsletter

GES Families,

As we look ahead to the final quarter of the year beginning after spring break, please be sure you have some important upcoming dates on your calendars. Designs for the SpokesKIDS Jr. t-shirts are due to Mrs. McDonald by March 22. (Read below for more information about SpokesKIDS Jr.) April 8 is a no school day for students. This is also the day of the total solar eclipse. For third grade families, April 10-11 and April 17-18 are ELA and math state testing dates, respectively. Classroom teachers have shared additional information about the tests, but if you have specific questions, please reach out to your classroom teacher. Supergames this year will be May 23. This event always requires many volunteers to assist. If you are able to help out, even for a portion of the day, please reach out to your classroom teacher or to Mr. Ward. May 30 is our last day for students. Dismissal on this day will be at 12:00 PM. Additional dates with classroom or grade-level specific events will be shared directly by teachers. Get ready, the post-spring break rush to the end of the school year is just about here!

Have a great weekend!

Mr. Morris

ACE LEADER TRAIT FOR THE WEEK

Blue Ace Leaders encourage others to be Ace Leaders.

MESSAGE FROM NURSE BURDICK

If your student is absent for a contagious illness (i.e. doctor diagnosed influenza A or B, strep throat, pink eye, covid…etc), please remember to tell us in the comment section of Safe Arrival. This greatly helps us in the clinics know what is going around when we see students with various symptoms!

WHAT IS AN "AWESOME"?

Positive feedback and support is a hallmark of creating an engaging, safe, and thriving learning environment. Awesomes are given to students to tangibly recognize their choices and actions which contribute to the thriving culture in the classroom or the school. Students receive Awesomes from adults and from other students. An important focus of the Awesome is the feedback students receive for why they received the recognition. This feedback encourages them and others to continue to engage in positive choices and actions.

COUNSELOR'S CORNER

STRATEGY OF THE MONTH

This month students will learn about the importance of journaling/drawing pictures about our worries and then crumpling them up to “throw away” those worries. Students will see an example of a “Worry Monster” to make at home using an empty tissue box to feed our worries to the monster. They will also learn that time decreases our worries. They can look back at old worries that they wrote about and recognize that they no longer have that worry.

CLASSROOM LESSONS IN MARCH

Kindergarten:  This month students will be having a lesson from the “Zones of Regulation” program. They will continue to learn about different feelings and color zones. In addition, they will hear about “size of the problem” and learn that their reactions should match the size of the problem.

First Grade: Our students will listen to a story and review the different feelings and color zones. In addition, they will practice doing some “zones check-ins”.

Second Grade: Students will listen to a story and review the “Zones of Regulation.” They will practice reading various scenarios and identifying what zone they would be in.

Third Grade: Students will have another lesson from the TGFD program. The lesson will focus on skills used for active listening. They will practice their listening skills by doing a fun activity.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Thatcher

WELL NOTE:

Marijuana changes the physical make-up of the brain and can lower IQ by 5 points. Researchers have found adolescents who abuse marijuana have less brain volume, or gray matter, in the orbitofrontal cortex which is responsible for decision making.
