GIS Weekly Newsletter

Dear GIS Families,

On Wednesday of this week, I sent an email to all of our families with detailed information regarding Ohio's child sexual abuse prevention requirements entitled Erin's Law. Included in the email is a link to the state-approved video we will be using for the lesson at each of the grade levels. If you would like to opt out your child from the lesson (these will not begin until after Ohio State Testing is completed), please email me directly at [email protected] by March 22. Thank you!

Take care,

Tracie Lees

PAX Tools Parent/Guardian Workshop March 19:

PAX Tools are a collection of nine evidence-based strategies to improve cooperation and self-regulation with children and youth. The tools draw on decades of science to create strategies that support parents, youth workers, and caring adults to create a nurturing environment that helps kids thrive. PAX Tools are rooted in the same science used in many of our schools, including GES. The PAX Tools strategies, which have successful outcomes, are fun for children, teens, and adults. This program is funded by Licking Memorial Health Systems and supported by Mental Health and Recovery for Licking and Knox Counties and by Our Futures in Licking County. Click here for more information.

GIS Battle of the Books:

Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading incentive program that is offered each year for grades 3-6. Students read the books throughout the winter and spring, choose their teammates, then compete against other teams during a school day in May. Students are quizzed on their knowledge of the books in a variety of fun formats. Students do not need to commit to participating at this point, however, they are encouraged to start reading now so they’ll be ready! More info will come in the early spring, but for now, let’s GET READING! Here are the lists of this year’s books:

A Message from Ms. Baker:

POG Trait of the Month for February – Critical Thinkers

Last month we highlighted students who consistently demonstrate critical thinking skills. Blue Ace Leaders collect, assess, and analyze information to make sound judgments and decisions. A Blue Ace leader refines and evaluates ideas in order to innovate and maximize creative efforts. A Blue Ace Leader reflects on the learning process, feedback, and solutions. Critical thinking is not just for academics, but for making “sound judgement and decisions”. It was a great month celebrating our students making positive decisions in these dull days of winter!

WELL NOTE

Would you be able to memorize the times tables while being chased by a bear? This is the experience students feel attempting to learn while under stress. Developing techniques to manage stress is vital to any students’ learning.

Reporting Student Absences:

All absences need to be reported to the GIS office as soon as possible. Absences should be reported in SafeArrival. You are asked to report your child’s absence using any of these three convenient methods:

  1. Using your mobile device, download and install the SchoolMessenger app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store (or from the links at https://go.schoolmessenger.com). The first time you use the app, select Sign Up to create your account. Select Attendance then Report an Absence.

These options are available 24 hours/day, 7 days a week. Future absences can be reported at any time.
