GES Weekly Newsletter

GES Families,

All families should have received a message sent from me directly regarding Erin's Law. (The email was sent on Wednesday evening.) If you do not recall seeing such a message, please check your email or reach out directly to me or Mrs. Thatcher. We are also available for questions regarding the instruction required by state law. Please remember the deadline for opting out of the lesson (on this form) is March 15. We will need one form for each child if you are choosing to opt out.

Have a great weekend!

Mr. Morris

GES SCHOOL NEWS

ACE LEADER TRAIT FOR THE WEEK

Blue Ace Leaders sneeze or cough into their arm.

MESSAGE FROM NURSE BURDICK

If your student is absent for a contagious illness (i.e. doctor diagnosed influenza A or B, strep throat, pink eye, covid…etc), please remember to tell us in the comment section of Safe Arrival. This greatly helps us in the clinics know what is going around when we see students with various symptoms!

WHAT IS AN ACE VISION?

An Ace Vision is the foundation for communicating expected and unexpected behaviors to our GES Ace Leaders. Teachers and students collaborate together to create and follow their Ace Visions, not only in classrooms, but throughout the entire school community. These visions are agreed-upon expectations for each person in the classroom. Teachers and students can use these tools for goal-setting, regulating expected and unexpected choices, as well as setting the tone for a positive school experience. Ace Visions are fluid documents revisited often as the year progresses and our needs adjust. Ask your child about the classroom Ace Vision and examples of the expectations.

LOST AND FOUND

We have quite the collection of lost and misplaced items at GES. Our collection includes glasses, hats, lunchboxes, shirts, lions, tigers, and bears- oh my! The lost and found can be found next to the gym entrance and the book machine. Feel free to stop by and search for your child's misplaced items. Any items remaining on March 22 will be donated.

PAX TOOLS PARENT WORKSHOP- MARCH 19

PAX Tools are a collection of nine evidence-based strategies to improve cooperation and self-regulation with children and youth. The tools draw on decades of science to create strategies that support parents, youth workers, and caring adults to create a nurturing environment that helps kids thrive. PAX Tools are rooted in the same science used in many of our schools, including GES. The PAX Tools strategies, which have successful outcomes, are fun for children, teens, and adults. This program is funded by Licking Memorial Health Systems and supported by Mental Health and Recovery for Licking and Knox Counties and by Our Futures in Licking County. Click here for more information.

COUNSELOR'S CORNER

STRATEGY OF THE MONTH

This month students will learn about the importance of journaling/drawing pictures about our worries and then crumpling them up to “throw away” those worries. Students will see an example of a “Worry Monster” to make at home using an empty tissue box to feed our worries to the monster. They will also learn that time decreases our worries. They can look back at old worries that they wrote about and recognize that they no longer have that worry.

CLASSROOM LESSONS IN MARCH

Kindergarten:  This month students will be having a lesson from the “Zones of Regulation” program. They will continue to learn about different feelings and color zones. In addition, they will hear about “size of the problem” and learn that their reactions should match the size of the problem.

First Grade: Our students will listen to a story and review the different feelings and color zones. In addition, they will practice doing some “zones check-ins”.

Second Grade: Students will listen to a story and review the “Zones of Regulation.” They will practice reading various scenarios and identifying what zone they would be in.

Third Grade: Students will have another lesson from the TGFD program. The lesson will focus on skills used for active listening. They will practice their listening skills by doing a fun activity.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Thatcher

WELL NOTE

Would you be able to memorize the times tables while being chased by a bear? This is the experience students feel attempting to learn while under stress. Developing techniques to manage stress is vital to any students’ learning.

ALTERNATIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCES

Under state attendance laws, vacations are considered unexcused absences unless specifically stated in District policy. Vacations are now referred to as Alternative Learning Experiences, or ALE, as the District values and recognizes the learning that can take place with travel. Click here to apply for an ALE.

PTO MEETINGS

The Granville K-6 PTO will host regular meetings on the third Monday of each month (some exceptions do apply). Meetings will be held in the GES cafeteria at 9:30. All K-6 parents are invited to join. Contact the PTO members directly at [email protected] if you have any questions.
