GIS Weekly Newsletter

Dear Granville School District Parents and Guardians,

We hope this message finds you well and ready for a Spring Break with your students. We would like to share some information related to the total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024:

School Closure for Professional Development:

  • On April 8, the Granville Schools will be closed for a professional development day. This date was moved from a later April date at the beginning of this school year. No school for students on April 8!

Solar Eclipse Viewing Opportunity:

  • A total solar eclipse is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! To make this celestial event memorable for our students, we have prepared the following:

Solar Eclipse Glasses:

  • Each student will receive a pair of solar eclipse viewing glasses. These glasses were generously donated through a partnership between the Granville Education Foundation and the Granville Public Library. We truly appreciate their support for these glasses and so much more they do for our schools!

  • *Safety First: While observing the solar eclipse, it’s crucial to follow safety guidelines. Encourage your child to use the provided glasses and avoid looking directly at the sun without protection.

7th Grade Science Presentations:

  • GMS 7th-grade science classes are diligently working on informative presentations about the eclipse that they will share with students at GES and GIS. These presentations will include a brochure with essential tips for safe eclipse viewing that will come home with each student.

Wishing all of our families a safe and restful spring break!

Take care,

Tracie Lees

NEWS & INFORMATION

GIS Dates for Ohio State Testing 2024:

Please use this link to access the GIS OST (AIR) testing schedule - GIS State Testing Schedule 2024.

*Note: 5th and 6th grade ELA testing starts Thursday, April 4th.

Sixth Grade T-shirt Order:

Annually, 6th grade families have put on an amazing end of the year party for rising 7th graders. We designed a shirt for all students to wear to King’s Island and on the last day of school. The shirts will have the class list on the back and will be a great keepsake for years to come. The party will be during the last day of school and will feature dunk tanks, a photo booth, shaved ice, an inflatable, face painting, music, yard games, and a snack table. The PTO has donated $500 for the event, and we hope to have snacks donated. Look for a signup genius to come home soon. The 6th grade staff have worked hard to make this a memorable event!

GIS Art to Remember:

Don't forget about our fundraiser with Art to Remember! We’ve been so lucky to work with the Art To Remember group for over a decade. Your student’s personalized order form will be sent home the week of March 6 and order deadline is Friday, March 22. Online ordering makes it easy to order artworks and products without the back and forth of paper forms. You can purchase keepsake products customized with your child's art. There are over 60 products to choose from and a percentage of every purchase goes right back to our school.  Click on the link below to start shopping! If you have any questions, contact your student’s art teacher, Amanda Tucker. [email protected].

GIS Battle of the Books:

Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading incentive program that is offered each year for grades 3-6. Students read the books throughout the winter and spring, choose their teammates, then compete against other teams during a school day in May. Students are quizzed on their knowledge of the books in a variety of fun formats. Students do not need to commit to participating at this point, however, they are encouraged to start reading now so they’ll be ready! More info will come in the early spring, but for now, let’s GET READING! Here are the lists of this year’s books:

A Message from Ms. Baker:

Sleep and Children’s Mental Health

Getting a good night’s sleep is so important for our mental and physical health. Sleep helps our brains pay attention, learn new things and remember things. Not getting enough sleep can increase negative emotions and decrease positive ones. Check out these tips for healthy sleep habits and when to get help.

WELL NOTE

Nutrition research indicates that particular cognitive abilities and mood states are positively influenced by water consumption. Even young children can learn the importance and habits of appropriate water consumption.
