GES Weekly Newsletter

GES Families,

A Blue Ace Leader at GES is respectful, responsible, and safe. Blue Ace leaders also exemplify our essential Portrait of a Graduate traits. At the end of every month students from all grades are chosen to be recognized for consistently demonstrating one of the Portrait of a Graduate traits. For the month of February, we recognized students who were demonstrating empathy. Click here to see a list of the Blue Ace Leaders for February. Congratulations to this month's leaders!

Have a great weekend!

PAX TOOLS PARENT WORKSHOP- MARCH 19

PAX Tools are a collection of nine evidence-based strategies to improve cooperation and self-regulation with children and youth. The tools draw on decades of science to create strategies that support parents, youth workers, and caring adults to create a nurturing environment that helps kids thrive. PAX Tools are rooted in the same science used in many of our schools, including GES. The PAX Tools strategies, which have successful outcomes, are fun for children, teens, and adults. This program is funded by Licking Memorial Health Systems and supported by Mental Health and Recovery for Licking and Knox Counties and by Our Futures in Licking County. Click here for more information.

READING CURRICULUM UPDATE

Reading Curriculum Update: The State of Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (ODEW) is requiring all school districts to adopt Science of Reading specific materials for grades K – 5 for the 2024-25 school year. The State was supposed to come out with a list of approved materials/curriculum schools could select in the fall. That list was pushed back to November/December, and now was recently released in late January. The implementation timeline is still for the 2024-25 school year. We have been reviewing reading and writing curriculum over the past two school years in preparation for this change. That review process includes use of EdReports and other research agencies that compile data on alignment, usability and effectiveness of all reading programs. The World Class Education Committee, composed of Granville Schools’ residents and parents, was involved in this review as well. From the feedback from staff, committee members and administrators, Granville Schools intends to propose Wit & Wisdom (with Geodes) as the curricular choice for Granville Elementary and Granville Intermediate Schools language arts classes. The Board of Education will review this request at their March Board meeting. We invite any community member to review the Wit & Wisdom curriculum, as samples are located at the District Office (2nd floor) at 130 N. Granger St. If interested in reviewing those materials, please contact Granville Schools Assistant Superintendent Ryan Bernath ([email protected]) to arrange a time for review and/or to offer any feedback for consideration.

COUNSELOR'S CORNER

STRATEGY OF THE MONTH

This month students will learn about the importance of journaling/drawing pictures about our worries and then crumpling them up to “throw away” those worries. Students will see an example of a “Worry Monster” to make at home using an empty tissue box to feed our worries to the monster. They will also learn that time decreases our worries. They can look back at old worries that they wrote about and recognize that they no longer have that worry.

CLASSROOM LESSONS IN MARCH

Kindergarten:  This month students will be having a lesson from the “Zones of Regulation” program. They will continue to learn about different feelings and color zones. In addition, they will hear about “size of the problem” and learn that their reactions should match the size of the problem.

First Grade: Our students will listen to a story and review the different feelings and color zones. In addition, they will practice doing some “zones check-ins”.

Second Grade: Students will listen to a story and review the “Zones of Regulation.” They will practice reading various scenarios and identifying what zone they would be in.

Third Grade: Students will have another lesson from the TGFD program. The lesson will focus on skills used for active listening. They will practice their listening skills by doing a fun activity.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Thatcher

WELL NOTE

Engaging students in conversations about events in the world, books, movies, and social events assists students in developing curiosity and critical thinking skills. Your students are never too young or too old to have these conversations.
