GIS Weekly Newsletter

Dear GIS Families,

With winter fully upon us, please ensure that your child is prepared with the appropriate clothing to be outside. We want our students to be comfortable and able to enjoy their time at recess. If you do notice that your child is missing gloves, coats, hats, and hoodies, please remind them to take a look at our lost and found located in the cafeteria. Thank you!

Take care,

Tracie Lees

NEWS & INFORMATION

GIS Battle of the Books:

Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading incentive program that is offered each year for grades 3-6. Students read the books throughout the winter and spring, choose their teammates, then compete against other teams during a school day in May. Students are quizzed on their knowledge of the books in a variety of fun formats. Students do not need to commit to participating at this point, however, they are encouraged to start reading now so they’ll be ready! More info will come in the early spring, but for now, let’s GET READING! Here are the lists of this year’s books:

Spread Warmth this Winter - GHS Key Club Collection:

Granville High School Key Club is holding a drive for adult hats, gloves, and socks! We would love if you could have your younger ones come in with these things to help out with The Community Health Clinic in Newark. If you have any of these new or gently used items that you can donate, please send them to school with your child. Click here for more information. Thank you for your care and generosity!

Boys Lacrosse Clinic at GHS:

High School Boys Head Coach, Adam Stewart, will be hosting a skills clinic for Granville Youth (Grades 3-8) on February 10th. Registration is available via the GRD website (link below). This will be a great way to not only knock some rust off from over the winter, but also for the boys to be able to interact with both the HS/MS Staff and current Varsity Players! Click here for more information. (program is on page 2 of the registration page and listed as Blue Ace Boys Lacrosse Clinic)

  • Date: February 10th

  • Location: High School Stadium

  • Time: 12:00-2:00 (indoor time if needed due to weather is 2:00-4:00)

  • Cost: $65

  • Director: Adam Stewart, Varsity HC

  • Staff: HS/MS Staff + Current HS Varsity Players

A Message from Ms. Baker:

Phones & Devices: A Guide for Parents & Caregivers

Check out this article that contains helpful guidelines and parenting tips for pre-teens and teens using smart devices. My favorite suggestion – plug all smart devices into a common area at bedtime for charging overnight. You might be surprised at the number of 9-13 year olds who go to bed with their phone and are awake in the middle of the night due to notifications. This makes for an early wake-up and many times an emotional day at school. Everything feels harder, more dramatic and a bigger deal when you are tired…even for grown-ups!

WELL NOTE

Research demonstrates that when students are told they are “smart,” they tend to avoid challenging tasks which might show they are “not smart.” Praise your student for hard work, resilience, and passion rather than expressing a subjective level of “smart.”

Under state attendance laws, vacations are considered unexcused absences unless specifically stated in District policy. Vacations are now referred to as Alternative Learning Experiences, or ALE, as the District values and recognizes the learning that can take place with travel. Click here to apply for an ALE.

Reporting Student Absences:

All absences need to be reported to the GIS office as soon as possible. Absences should be reported in SafeArrival. You are asked to report your child’s absence using any of these three convenient methods:

  1. Using your mobile device, download and install the SchoolMessenger app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store (or from the links at https://go.schoolmessenger.com). The first time you use the app, select Sign Up to create your account. Select Attendance then Report an Absence.

  2. Use the SafeArrival website, https://go.schoolmessenger.com. The first time you use the website, select Sign Up to create your account. Select Attendance then Report an Absence.

  3. Call the toll-free number (866) 294-5982 to report an absence using the automated phone system.

These options are available 24 hours/day, 7 days a week. Future absences can be reported at any time.

End of the School Day Requests:

The end of the school day is one of the busiest times of the day. If you have a change in transportation, please let the main office know prior to 2:50 pm. This will allow us time to communicate the changes to students. If you do have transportation requests, please email Janine McCullough at [email protected] or call 587-8103.
