GIS Weekly Newsletter

Dear GIS Families,

The GIS Shout Out Focus for February is Critical Thinkers. We define this as:

  • A Blue Ace collects, assesses, and analyzes information to make sound judgments and decisions.

  • A Blue Ace refines and evaluates ideas in order to innovate and maximize creative efforts.

  • A Blue Ace reflects on the learning process, feedback, and solutions.

Critical thinking is not just for academics, but for making “sound judgement and decisions”. Let’s celebrate our students making positive decisions in these dull days of winter! We will continue to give Shout Outs for all kinds of Blue Ace Leader behaviors and highlight students who are demonstrating critical thinking skills with our Flapjack Fiesta at the end of the month.

Take care,

Tracie Lees

NEWS & INFORMATION

Coping with Teenagers Emotions:

This session for parents gives some practical suggestions to help teach teens how to manage their emotions. When teens become emotional, it can be difficult for parents to calm them down. The important thing is for teens to learn how calm themselves when they get upset about something. Parents can help by acknowledging the emotional experience and providing appropriate support without being intrusive. Learning to manage emotions is an important life skill! This program will explain how parents can use some simple positive parenting strategies to help prevent problems and to cope with teens’ emotional behavior if it occurs. Click here for more information.

GIS Battle of the Books:

Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading incentive program that is offered each year for grades 3-6. Students read the books throughout the winter and spring, choose their teammates, then compete against other teams during a school day in May. Students are quizzed on their knowledge of the books in a variety of fun formats. Students do not need to commit to participating at this point, however, they are encouraged to start reading now so they’ll be ready! More info will come in the early spring, but for now, let’s GET READING! Here are the lists of this year’s books:
