GMS Weekly Newsletter

New Announcements

Greetings, GMS Families -

The solar eclipse has finally arrived (let's hope weather cooperates)! On Thursday, students were all given solar eclipse viewing glasses and a brochure about the eclipse, created by GMS Adv. Science 7 students. This past Thursday and Friday, the Adv. Science 7 students went to GES and GIS to present information about the eclipse. Encourage your child to use the provided glasses and avoid looking directly at the sun without protection. Enjoy the day!

Here's to a strong 4th quarter, and as always, we welcome your questions, concerns, and positive thoughts.

Respectfully,

Lisa Ormond

Principal, GMS

CHROMEBOOKS NOT CHARGED

Please help us! More and more students are coming to school with zero battery life on their chromebooks. Each classroom only has one charger. Students should always have their chargers in the backpacks just in case. Please encourage your child to charge their devices every night (near their backpack is ideal so they don't forget them). Their cell phones always seem charged.....hmmmm....

TRIPLE P - REDUCING FAMILY CONFLICT ON 4/16

Reducing Family Conflict is a Triple P discussion group program that will help you deal with the day-to-day challenges of parenting teens. Many parents find that conflict between siblings and among family members increases as children move into the teenage years. It can be quite a challenge to know when to intervene in an argument or how to remain calm if you become involved. This program will give you some practical suggestions to help you teach your teens to solve problems peaceably, as well as how to manage problems if you do have family conflict. You will learn how to help your child deal with disagreements without becoming aggressive and how to promote family harmony. Click here for more information.

SCHOOL COUNSELOR NEWS

Hello Families,

Next week, I will be sending out information for current 7th graders to apply to be student orientation leaders in August for the rising 7th grade and new 8th grade students. If your child is interested in volunteering for this opportunity, please make sure they fill out the form next week (it will be posted in Schoology and we will give reminders during morning announcements). Orientation sessions will take place during the mornings of August 13 and 14, and I will be hosting an information/"training" session for the student leaders in a few weeks during an ACE period (date TBD). I will share more details to those who sign up at a later time. Reach out if you have questions in the meantime!

Best,

Sydney Frazier

LMH ANNUAL FREE PHYSICALS

Click here for more information on how to schedule a free physical for school sports. The scheduling window opened today, April 1.

ATTENDANCE REMINDERS - NEW POLICY

With SafeArrival, you are asked to report your child’s absence in advance using any of these three convenient methods:

1. Using your mobile device, download and install the SchoolMessenger app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store (or from the links at https://go.schoolmessenger.com). The first time you use the app, select Sign Up to create your account. Select Attendance then Report an Absence.

2. Use the SafeArrival website, https://go.schoolmessenger.com. The first time you use the website, select Sign Up to create your account. Select Attendance then Report an Absence.

3. Call the toll-free number (866) 294-5982 to report an absence using the automated phone system.

These options are available 24 hours/day, 7 days a week. Future absences can be reported at any time.

PLEASE NOTE: If your child is going to arrive late you will still need to select the option absent even though they will be in school sometime during the day. The office will reconcile the time the student arrives.

ALE POLICY (aka vacation days)

Families taking vacations during the year can now apply to have up to five days a year counted as excused absences. Vacations are now referred to as Alternative Learning Experiences, or ALE, as the District values and recognizes the learning that can take place with travel. A family can include as many as five students on the form. The excused days can be used together in one ALE or at different times in multiple ALE’s. ALE forms can be rejected if the student(s) has attendance issues or academic concerns that do not warrant excusal by Granville Schools. https://forms.office.com/r/F4iNHH1F32

SPORTS & CLUBS

TRACK

The Blue Aces had a good night Friday at the Gardner Relays, competing against seven other teams, most all of them from larger districts than ours. Our girls brought home the first place trophy, beating out Dublin’s Eversole Run 92 to 85. Our boys rallied to overcome Marysville, scoring 73.5 points to Marysville’s 72, and took second place behind Eversole Run’s 91.5 points. The top six relays scored in each event.

First place finishers for the Aces were:

Girls 4X800: Aquilina, Weaver, Tonnessen, Hadley

Girls shot put: Henshaw, Bruce

Girls high jump: Reynolds, L. Cook

Boys 4x400: Timmons, Camp, Merz, B. Schirf

Garrett Hinton placed first overall in the shot put (scoring second place as a relay with Luke Largent). We had many top three finishes and some amazing performances, especially so early in the season with limited practices.
