GHS Weekly Newsletter

GHS Families,

Scheduling for the 2024-2025 is officially underway. If you have an upcoming Junior or Senior they were presented with a great deal of information this past week. Students will enter their schedule requests at the end of February or early March. Please review this information with your child and reach out to either their counselor or myself if you have questions. We have a good deal of exciting changes taking place for next school year and want families to have a full understanding of these options. Upcoming Sophomores will receive their schedule packets early next week.

All scheduling information can be found on our website here:

https://www.granvilleschools.org/CourseInformationSchedulingDownloads.aspx

Reminder that parent-teacher conferences will serve as a great opportunity to meet with teachers and to attend the parent information night in the theater at 6:30.

If you have any questions or concerns please reach out to me. I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Mr. Hinton

GHS Principal

Guest Speaker - February 15th

On Thursday, February 15th our 11th and 12th grade students will have the opportunity to listen to a guest speaker from RAINN Speakers Bureau. Viv Tullis is a volunteer speaker through the organization who educates students on Sexual Violence. Ms. Tullis uses her personal experience to spread awareness. Through her presentation she will discuss her decision to come forward and the challenges that she faced throughout the process. In addition, she will discuss how she has taken this experience and propelled herself forward to become an attorney. Lastly, she will communicate the importance of finding a support system.

I wanted to communicate clearly that this is a voluntary presentation for students. We want all students and families to feel comfortable attending. The presentation will take place during Ace period and part of 4th period on Thursday, February 15th. Students will receive direction that if they wish to attend the presentation, they will simply report to the theater during Ace period.

Parent-Teacher Conferences and Information

Parent-teacher conferences will take place Thursday, February 15th. Please use this link to sign up for a conference with your child's teacher. Additionally, we are working to provide new course opportunities for our students next year. One opportunity we are excited to share is our new partnership with Shawnee State University. Starting next school year we will be able to provide several College Credit Plus opportunities within the walls of GHS. Also, we are working to develop different options involving Self-Directed Learning, hybrid models, and online courses. Lastly, the requirements for achievement of an Academic Honors Diploma will change starting with the Class of 2026. To help families understand all of these changes I will be holding an informational session the night of conferences (Thursday, February 15th at 6:30 pm) in the GHS theater. This presentation will take place in the middle of the scheduling process for students currently in grades 9-11 so will be a valuable resource for parents. If you cannot make it we plan to record the event and shared.

I Matter 2024

Now in its 12th year as a staple event in Central Ohio, I Matter is a free, annual community conference that gives girls in grades 6-12 the skills they need to engage in healthy relationships and provides their moms and mother figures with the tools and strategies necessary to support them. Guests will receive free parking, event t-shirts, refreshments, and exclusive giveaways! Girls talk about relationships as one of the big issues in their lives as early as fifth grade. While grown-ups might see these early connections as trivial, for girls, the feelings involved are genuine and strong. To help girls develop supportive relationships, Ruling Our eXperiences (ROX), The Center for Family Safety and Healing and Nationwide Children’s Hospital have teamed-up to provide you and your girls the resources, education, and support to navigate teen dating and relationships. Free registration closes 2/14! Sign-up today at https://imatter2024.eventbrite.com/

Winter Play Announcement

Granville High School’s Theatre Department will be producing and performing Don Zolidis’s fantastical show, The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon, on Friday February 9th and Saturday February 10th, at 7 pm in GHS’s Theater and Performing Arts Center. The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon is a magical show that attempts to take as many Brothers Grimm tales as possible (209!) and combine them into a hilarious singular story with more wacky twists and turns than even the biggest dreamer could not conceive of.

Dive into familiar classics, like Snow White, Cinderella, and Rapunzel, while discovering some more bizarre and obscure stories, like the adventurous tale of the Crab People and The Fish Girl. Guided by two goofy, but knowledgeable narrators, this show is sure to have you laughing at every line. Please note that the show is rated PG due to some of the more twisted tales. For tickets, visit https://www.showtix4u.com/event-details/80041.

Volleyball Meeting

There will be a High School Volleyball player meeting next Tuesday 2/13 @ 3pm in Senior Lounge. Current 8th-11th graders should plan on attending.

Summer Writing Workshop at Denison University

For nearly three decades, talented high school juniors and seniors to-be have been welcomed to Denison University for the Reynolds Young Writers Workshop. The workshop is an eight-day residential program in June that incorporates small creative writing workshops, group sessions with Denison creative writing faculty and notable visiting writers, and much more. That means students experience small, intimate writing workshops and one-on-one interactions with people who have made writing their career. It's a great way to connect with a close-knit community of writing teachers, mentors, and peers from around the world. Learn more and apply here by March 1, 2024.

Camp Med- Class of 2025

Licking Memorial Health Systems provides a 2-day intensive camp for rising seniors interested in careers in the healthcare industry. If accepted, students participate in mock laboratories, mock clinical procedures and physician presentations. Camp Med takes place July 9-10, 2024, and all applications are due by March 1, 2024. Students can pick up the current application in the counseling office or they can be found online here.

?Scheduling 2024-2025

Beginning next week, students will learn about course selections and options for the next school year. The school counselors will spend an ACE period in the theatre with each grade level, and then will spend the following day in their social studies classes to review transcripts, scheduling sheet, and 4-year graduation plans for all students and answer questions. Students will have several weeks to consult with their teachers and make scheduling choices prior to submitting them in PowerSchool. See below for the dates that counselors will talk to each grade level:

  • 2/12: Counselors in World/AP World classes

  • 2/13: ACE presentation in theatre with 9th

  • 2/14: Counselors in US History classes

  • 2/21: 8th grade social studies

College Credit Plus

On Wednesday, the high school counselors held a College Credit Plus Information Night, with panelists from COTC, OSU-Newark, and Shawnee State University. Here is a link to the video, which includes information about dual enrollment options at local college campuses and new classes being taught at GHS next year. The courses at GHS will be taught by our own teachers and will be available to 11th and 12th grade students who qualify. More scheduling information will be coming soon. Additionally, there will be a Parent Information Night with Mr. Hinton for current grades 9-11 at 6:30PM on February 15 during Parent-Teacher conference night. If your student is interested in this opportunity, the first step is to complete the Intent to Participate form by April 1. After that, the student must complete the CCP application to the corresponding college and communicate with the school counselor.

Counselor Check-In: Start with Hello

As part of the Start with Hello program, the school counselors showed this video earlier this week as a reminder to take care of each other and check on one another. We want GHS to be a caring, welcoming, and empathetic place where students feel seen, heard, and cared for. We challenged student to think about the type of legacy they want to leave and how they can be a part of this welcoming community.

MVNU Summer Camps

I am excited to inform you that Mount Vernon Nazarene University (MVNU) will host Academic Summer Camps for high school students this summer! These will be week-long, overnight camps that will give students a chance to explore a future major and gain real world, hands-on experiences within different fields of study. We will offer nine different camps that include: art & design, education, engineering, film production, nursing, pre-med, psychology, science exploration, and worship arts. The camps will be held on MVNU’s campus from June 17-21, 2024.

Research has shown these types of camps assist students in discerning their future major, build students’ self-confidence, and increase the likelihood that students will attend college.

?We are offering these camps at cost (not profit-bearing) for $495.

I have attached an electronic flyer with the specific Academic Summer Camp information on it. Please feel free to distribute it to any students who might be interested in this opportunity. To get more information or to register, students can go to https://mvnu.edu/academics/on-campus/undergraduate/summer-camp/
