GES Weekly Newsletter

March 17, 2023

GES Families,

Each year we ask students in grades 3, 6, 8, and 12 to reflect on their overall experiences in their respective buildings in the form of a brief survey. This survey will be completed by our third graders during the weeks adjacent to spring break. The information will allow building and district leaders to reflect on the student experiences at each building and respond accordingly. A list of survey questions can be found here. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions.

Have a great weekend!

AUCTION MESSAGE FROM PTO PRESIDENT ANDREA WHITT
With the Biennial Auction in April we are gathering silent auction donations. I have included a Signupgenius link with basket ideas that you can sign up for. We have baskets left over from the 2020 auction (That COVID canceled) which we will be including. We are still looking for some Live Auction items (think big ticket items). If you have any connections to get tickets to sporting events in Ohio please message me. Thanks, this will be an amazing auction!

SAVE THE DATE- LIFE OF A GIS 4TH GRADE GROWN-UP
All parents and caregivers of a rising 4th grader are welcome to attend a special meeting with school counselor Ms. Baker and building principal Ms. Lees on June 1, 2023 at 4pm. Topics will include the logistics of a 4th grade student school day, introduction of important support staff at GIS, quick tip strategies for helping to organize your student and set them up for a successful school year, and other general orientation items. This is a parent/caregiver only event. We look forward to seeing you in a few months!

SAVE THE DATE- LIFE OF A GIS 4TH GRADER
Our annual orientation for all incoming 4th graders will be held on August 16, 2023. This is a 30-minute student only event to welcome our 4th graders to our GIS family. Students will meet our school counselor, Ms. Baker, and the building principal, Ms. Lees, and learn from 6th grade GIS Student Experts about the life of a GIS 4th grader. Students will also be given a tour of the building so that they are comfortable, confident, and prepared for the first day of school. In order to provide a safe environment for our students, we are asking families to drop off and pick up their 4th graders at the times listed below according to the following groupings by students’ last names:
10:00-10:30: 4th graders last name A-F
10:45-11:15: 4th graders last name G-L
11:30-12:00 4th graders last name M-R
12:30-1:00: 4th graders last name S-Z
We look forward to meeting our 4th graders & families and welcoming them to GIS!

COUNSELOR'S CORNER

STRATEGY OF THE MONTH
This month students will learn about the importance of journaling/drawing pictures about our worries and then crumpling them up to “throw away” those worries. Students will see an example of a “Worry Monster” to make at home using an empty tissue box to feed our worries to the monster. They will also learn that time decreases our worries. They can look back at old worries that they wrote about and recognize that they no longer have that worry.

CLASSROOM LESSONS IN MARCH
  • Kindergarten: This month students will learn about peer pressure. They will learn how to communicate in an assertive way and discuss other ideas of how to handle peer pressure. They will also review healthy things to do with friends.
  • First Graders: This month first graders will have a lesson on managing disappointment. They will learn how to handle disappointing situations with positive thoughts and responses instead of negative thoughts and responses.
  • Second Graders: Second graders will have a lesson on managing mistakes. They will learn about positive and negative self-talk. Students will learn how to handle mistakes in a positive way.
  • Third Graders: Third grade students will participate in lesson 6 of our “Too Good for Drugs” program. The focus of this lesson is on peer pressure. Students will learn about both positive and negative peer pressure and practice effective peer pressure refusal strategies.

Please let me know if you have any questions regarding your child through email at [email protected] or calling (740) 587-8102.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Thatcher
