GHS Weekly Newsletter

Interim Grades

GHS Families,

It is hard to believe we are six weeks into the school year. As we near the end of September we set our sights on the end of the first nine weeks, which is October 21st. With the emergence of live tracking of grades through PowerSchool I want to encourage you to check your child’s progress and grades in classes, early and often. If you see an issue, please reach out to the teacher as soon as possible via email or Schoology, instead of waiting for the end of the nine weeks so we are able to assist in interventions. If you are having trouble accessing your child’s grades on PowerSchool please reach out to me so we can provide you with access.

In addition, Parent-Teacher conferences will be held the evening of October, 13th. More information on how to sign up for conferences will be shared next week.

School Counselor Update

College 101- Juniors
The school counselors were in Government and AP Government classes on Wednesdays with all juniors to introduce the College 101 curriculum. Over the course of the year, we will spend time together covering topics such as types of college, college entrance testing, college visits, financial aid, and everything else students need to know prior to senior year. If you missed Wednesday or are not in a Government class, you can access all presentation materials in Schoology in the Class of 2024 group, found in Materials, in the College 101 folder. Students are also encouraged to reach out to their counselor and set up a meeting to discuss their plans at any time.

College Application Help Session- September 26
Seniors- if you have started working on college applications OR still need to get started, you are invited to come and work on college apps on Monday afternoon at in the senior lounge from 1-3 PM. The school counselors will all be there to answer questions and encourage you as you work. All you need to bring is a laptop!

FAFSA Available Starting October 1
Seniors applying to college should file the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) in order to qualify for need-based aid. The application opens on October 1 and can be filed anytime after that date. First, students will need to create an FSA ID to begin the FAFSA. You can use tax return information from 2020 to complete the FAFSA through the Prior-Prior Year requirements. Here is a helpful worksheet for the information you will need to gather.  For tips and advice about FAFSA completion, watch this video.
