GES Weekly Newsletter

GES Families,
?
?We are currently in need of volunteers for our GES lunchroom. Volunteers would need to make a commitment from orientation until the end of December for this role. There are three shifts available: 11-12 pm, 12-1pm, or 12:30-1:30 pm. Volunteers may choose which day(s) of the week they would like to volunteer and for which time slots. We are asking for a consistent time slot and day(s) of the week to provide consistency and routine for our students and staff. Of course, we can make accommodations for obligations that may occur or are already scheduled. An orientation will be held to review lunchroom procedures and expectations. You will receive an email from Tracy Stewart, Assistant Principal at GES, once an orientation date is set. We are hoping to begin in October. If this opportunity works for you, please complete this form. You will also need to complete the volunteer training here.

Have a great weekend!

ABSENCE ALERTS ON POWERSCHOOL APP
If you are using the Powerschool App, you may get an alert of an unexcused absence on a day your child is not in school. Please note that this is a default setting that cannot be changed. Once all attendance is collected for the morning, our school secretary will reconcile absence information and, for those with proper communication, will change absences from unexcused to excused. A second alert indicating the change will be provided. This process is usually completed around 10:00 AM.

PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES
This year's fall parent-teacher conferences are scheduled for the week of October 10. If you have not already signed up for a conference time with your child's teacher, please be sure to look for information in the next few weeks. This is a great opportunity to dialogue about your child's progress and how you can continue to work collaboratively to support your child.

COUNSELOR'S CORNER

STRATEGY OF THE MONTH
Each month throughout the year our students will learn about a strategy or tool to help them manage strong feelings or emotions. For September our students in all grades will learn how to do a “feelings check-in”. They will hear about the color zones from the “Zones of Regulation” program and identify what zone they are in based on their feeling(s). This will occur when I visit their classroom for their monthly lesson. Click here for a visual of the Zones check-in strategy.

CLASSROOM LESSONS IN SEPTEMBER
  • Kindergarten: Our first lesson from our program “Too Good For Drugs” focuses on setting goals. Students will meet “Tuggles” the bear and discuss their strengths and capabilities. They will name goals that they want to reach in the future and learn about who can help them reach those goals.
  • First Grade: Our first lesson from our “Too Good For Drugs” program will focus on setting reachable goals. Students will meet “Carmen” the cat and learn what a goal is, the steps necessary to reach a goal, and set a goal of their very own.
  • Second Grade: Our first lesson from “Too Good For Drugs” for second grade students will focus on the importance of goal setting and how to achieve those goals. They will meet “Wagner” the dog, and help Wagner learn how to reach his goals. Second graders will learn the step-by-step process in learning to reach goals.
  • Third Grade: Our first lesson from “Too Good For Drugs” for third graders will focus on setting personal goals. Our students will meet “Otto”, the robot, and learn that decisions are a choice, not something that is automatic. The students will learn about the steps involved in reaching a goal.
