On Thursday afternoon, the OHSAA notified all member schools that the winter sports
tournaments have been canceled due to the coronavirus
COVID-19 pandemic. This is obviously devastating news for student-athletes
across the state of Ohio, including our very own Blue Ace Wrestlers - Douglas
Terry, Carson Miller and Zach Walsh - who qualified for the State wrestling
meet. The safety and well-being of our student-athletes are our top
priority, and we applaud the leadership at OHSAA for making tough but
responsible decisions.
Qualifying and/or advancing to the state tournament is no
small accomplishment. It took months, if not years, for these
student-athletes to get to that point, and we are heartbroken that they will
not be able to represent the Granville community on the biggest stage of high
school sports. Douglas, Carson, and Zach, along with the rest of our winter
sport student-athletes and teams, have represented our school and community
well.
As of today, the OHSAA has postponed, not cancelled, the
spring sports season. OHSAA Executive Director Jerry Snodgrass has
been in weekly communication with athletic directors and principals across
the state to provide updates. We are hopeful the spring sports season will
still be held, and we will continue to communicate with you as we receive new
information.
Granville Athletics has had an exceptional year with success
stories and memories that our student-athletes will take with them for the
rest of their lives. To date, our student- athletes have made
significant accomplishments during the 2019-20 school year,
including:
- 6 team Licking
County League Championships
- 3 team District
Championships
- 1 State Final Four
- Girls Soccer
- 1 State Runner Up -
Girls Cross Country
- 3 individual State
Championship wrestling qualifiers
- 6 State Swimming
Finalists
More importantly, what is not listed above are countless
individual stories of personal and team growth that Granville Athletics
uniquely provide. Our Athletic Department is committed to excellence in
all areas to ensure we are providing our student-athletes with the best
interscholastic athletic experiences by mirroring our high academic
expectations.
