Internet Use Policy
One to One
All students now have daily access to a Chromebook.
Grades K-3 use a classroom cart model. The devices stay in the room and are not taken home
Grades 4-12 Chromebooks are assigned directly to the students. They are able to transport the devices back and forth between home and school.
Chromebook Damage or Loss
The district agrees to repair the district-owned Chromebooks once per year at no charge to the student or family if the damage or loss is accidental. Any damages after the first instance are the responsibility of the family.
Costs for repair will be billed at the cost of replacement parts and will not be marked up.
Labor costs will not be added to the cost of repair.
Loss or theft will be covered, but Granville Schools must be presented with a police report of the loss.
Power supplies or adapters are always the responsibility of the family.
The family will be responsible for damage or loss as the result of neglect or intentional abuse.
The cost of the repair shall not exceed the replacement cost of the Chromebook.
Chromebook Fees
A $40 annual fee with a $100 family maximum is required and will not be waived.
1 Child $40
2 Children $80
3 or More Children $100
This fee helps to defer the costs for some of the following.
Accidental damage to the device. The school will repair the device once per year if the damage to the device is deemed accidental. Any damage sustained from intentional or negligent acts will not be covered and the repair costs will be the responsibility of the parent. Power adapters that are damaged or lost are the responsibility of the family.
Management licenses. Different tools are used to manage the student devices inside and outside of the district. Google also requires a management license for each device.
Software Services are required for protecting the device. Multiple solutions are used to protect the device and network.
The sustainability of our program. A “refresh” cycle is a part of our program and guarantees that our students will not use devices past their useful lifespan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I opt-out?
No. Participation is mandatory in the same way that textbooks are mandatory.
Are students attending CTEC included?
No, only students currently enrolled fulltime at Granville are included in this program.
Will the Chromebook be filtered at home?
Yes, we will use a web filter and other tools to limit content on and off campus.
Can you give an example of accidental damage?
Examples of accidents or events that would be covered once by the district includes accidentally dropping the device or if their home flooded. However, the district will not cover damage from a Chromebook being left on the floor and a sibling accidentally stepping on it. We agree that this was an accident but the student has also agreed to keep their Chromebook in a safe location and placing it on the floor is not a safe location.
Can the district record what the student does while using the Chromebook?
Yes. Anything displayed on the screen or input into the device can be recorded and evaluated. The district will never use or remotely activate the camera on the Chromebook.
I don’t have Wi-Fi at home. Will the district provide wireless for me?
Families can contact the district office to inquire about hotspots.
How long is the battery life?
You should safely get 8+ hours of battery life from your Chromebook when fully charged. You should not need to bring your charger to school.
Is the Technology fee a one-time fee?
No, the Technology fee is $40 with a $100 family maximum and is due annually for students in grades 4-12.
The Chromebook Handbook states that damage from the first accident will be covered by the district. Is this the first instance each year?
Yes, the district will cover one accident per year.
Can I bring in my own device?
Yes, but you are also expected to have your Chromebook with you every day.
Can I play games on the Chromebook?
We recommend that you use personal devices for gaming. The district will limit sites available to educational sites. There will still be many gaming sites that our filtering partners have not identified that will be available to students.

Chromebook Cases/Sleeves
The student Chromebooks do not come with cases. It is recommended but not required that you purchase something to protect your device.
Our buildings don't allow backpacks in the classroom so the student should not expect to be able to use a backpack for the purpose of carrying their Chromebook between rooms.
We recommend cases specifically designed for Chromebooks. Sleeves are acceptable but will not provide much drop protection.
Here is an example of a durable case from Case Logic.
Note: We are not endorsing Case Logic or Amazon.com; provided only as an example.
