GEF Awards $9,000 in Spring Grants

The Granville Education Foundation is awarding spring grants totaling $9,037.38. Congratulations to these Granville teachers and staff!

Meredith Ervin and Jen Riley, GIS - $1,400 (partial funding) for standing desks. They plan to use them, along with standing desks purchased with Fuel Up To Play 60 funds, with individuals and small groups to give students the option of standing while working. This is a great opportunity for students who need more movement during class.

Laura Weaver, GIS - $828.07 for project based learning. The grant is for a variety of interactive simulations for students, focusing on the common core curriculum and connecting all content areas into a project based approach. Students will be working on these projects during content area instruction, as well as the smart period extension time available at the end of each day. Some of the special projects include, Our Solar System, Photosynthesis, Food and Populations and The Great Equation Race.

Tracey Salinas, GHS - $1,500 for World Language reading materials. Students will be able to choose books based on their ability level during free reading in class. It is another way of getting language input to the students.

Jim Reding, GHS - $600 for kiosk construction materials. Students in AP Environmental Science are working on a Take Action Project at the former Granville Solvents Inc. site, which was closed after numerous EPA violations. The site went through remediation but remains an actively monitored site as toxic chemicals remain in the soil. With the GEF grant, students plan to make an educational display, including three kiosks along the bike path, that tell the story of Granville Solvents and the lessons learned.

Evan McCullough, Jim Reding, et al. - $2,672.31 for a drone. The 3DR Solo “Smart Drone” features two onboard computers and a motorized camera mount on the bottom. Initial plans center on using the drone to provide aerial photography and cinematography in a variety of settings, including the Land Lab, GHS March Band drills, football practice and Fuel Up To Play 60 events. Students will also have opportunities to learn about drone piloting.

Sarah Noblett, GHS - $2,037 for a large format printer. Students in the Art Department will benefit from various software programs in which they create artwork through digital media. Students will now have the ability to display their work like traditional art, through the use of the large format printer.
