Surprise Visit Brings Learning Opportunities for Students

Waters first listened to a run through of select pieces with each band as directed by both Smith and assistant band director, Andrew Krumm. He then led students through sections of the piece he felt needed emphasis to elevate their performances.

Waters's dynamic and animated teaching style made the musicians stop and take notice. His lessons were peppered with sensory stimulating movements and words that drove home his points in a memorable and, at times, humorous manner.

His session left students' with strong reminders that music is composed of more than just notes on a page. A great performance comes from understanding how instruments communicate with each other during the piece. Waters wanted students to learn how strong emphasis on certain notes can deliver a message with confidence and conviction.

Waters's visit came at a crucial time for students. What he shared and how they grasped his teaching resulted in both bands receiving"Superior" ratings which moves them on to state competition next month.
