English Language Arts and Literacy

Literacy is foundational to any academic pursuit and necessary if students are to take an active role in our mission of Learning for Life.  In the elementary years, literacy is emphasized and instructed using a Balanced Literacy Framework.  The Balanced Literacy Framework (click here for diagram) is characterized by individualized, responsive instructional techniques that create the skill and stamina in reading and writing all students need as a strong foundation.  This framework is supported by curricular resources for students at all levels.  These include robust book rooms, Fundations for language and word study, and Units of Study for Reading and Writing.

As students transition to the secondary level, literacy instruction shifts to deeper understanding of content, enhanced writing capabilities, and critical research skills.  All Language Arts courses in grades 7 - 12 are college preparatory in nature.  Rigorous texts, classic and modern, are assigned during the school year and as part of summer reading requirements.  Writing is emphasized at all levels, and research writing is assigned at each grade, culminating with the senior research paper graduation requirement.

Starting in 7th grade, students who want more challenge and show an affinity for language arts can choose to take Advanced courses in English Language Arts.  At the high school level, AP (Advanced Placement) English Language and AP English Literature are available for those students.
